Association Profile
Established in December of 1984, the Canadian Dehydrators Association is a
non-profit association that works on behalf of the Canadian processed
alfalfa industry. The association represents member
plants, that together produce and market processed
alfalfa products to countries worldwide.
Canadian Processed Alfalfa Production
Canada's processed alfalfa industry is a value-added export market-driven
success story. It is an excellent example of progressive, export agri-food
development. The Canadian alfalfa industry contributes to sustainable
agriculture.
The majority of alfalfa processing plants in Canada are located in Alberta
and Saskatchewan, with the industry extending into Quebec and
Ontario.
Benefits of Growing Alfalfa
Canadian farmers value alfalfa in their crop rotations-alfalfa adds
nitrogen to the soil and contributes greatly to soil conservation. Canada
is a major producer and a reliable supplier of high quality processed
alfalfa products for both domestic and increasingly competitive
international markets. The prairie climate and lots of good land make conditions
ideal for growing alfalfa. An abundance of natural gas for drying,
established facilities and expertise for processing and marketing, and a
diligent approach to quality control, have contributed to the
success of this industry.
Canadian Processed Alfalfa Export Markets
Canada is a major exporter of alfalfa pellets and cubes; with more than 80%
of Canadian processed alfalfa products being exported. Japan is, by far,
our largest market. Other major markets include South Korea, Taiwan, Morocco
and the United States.
